Excavations and Fossil Protection

Find out the actions undertaken by the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest in order to protect, conserve and display the fossils at the Lesvos Petrified Forest.

In Western Lesvos, gigantic petrified tree trunks were discovered during salvage excavations at the site of Akroheira’s wind park. Implementing an innovative methodology, the trunks were safely transferred at new display positions.

While the Museum remains closed to the public, we will try to bring it to you by sharing activities, events, exhibitions, geoconservation projects and inspiring stories of its 25-year long journey.

Nissiopi Marine Petrified Forest Park

Did you know that there is also a Marine Petrified Forest Park in the island of Lesvos (in Lesvos Geopark)(ή Did you know that the Lesvos Petrified Forest has also a marine part)? In the islet of Nissiopi, the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest created the first marine fossil park in Europe! Let’s discover it together.

20-million-year-old petrified tree trunks have been discovered in the islet of Nissiopi and in the marine area around the island, waiting to share with you their unique stories. Among them gigantic trunks of sequoias, pine trees, oak trees, laurels and cinnamon trees.

You can visit the marine park during the summer months by the Museum’s special boat. Through the boat’s glass bottom you can observe not only the unique fossil sites that are now under the sea but also the geological formations and structures.

While the Museum remains closed to the public, we will try to bring it to you by sharing activities, events, exhibitions, geoconservation projects and inspiring stories of its 25-year long journey.

Exhibition: Deinotherium and sequoias from the Petrified Forest of Lesvos at Eugenides Foundation, Athens

Join us for a throwback to our exhibition “Deinotherium and sequoias from the Petrified Forest of Lesvos. Indicators of climate change in the Aegean ” at Eugenides Foundation in Athens.

The exhibition took us on an unforgettable journey through time, in the tropical forests of the Aegean. its central exhibit was the impressive life size model of the Deinotherium of Lesvos, with movement and sound effects. (The Lesvos Deinotherium is one of the oldest mammal fossils of Greece. It looked like an elephant and used to live in the subtropical forest of Lesvos island 19 million years ago.)

The exhibition also featured impressive fossils from the excavations conducted during 2018-2019 in the Petrified Forest of Lesvos, as well as information on plants and animals that lived in Lesvos 19 million years ago.

The 24.000 visitors (ή the public) had the opportunity to discover (ή experience) these unique fossil findings, find out their role as indicators of past climate change and understand the impacts of climate change in ecosystems.

While the Museum remains closed to the public, we will try to bring it to you by sharing activities, events, exhibitions, geoconservation projects and inspiring stories of its 25-year long journey.

Fossil excavation and conservation along the Kalloni-Sigri Lesvos road axis

Find out the actions undertaken by the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest in order to protect, conserve and display the fossils at the Lesvos Petrified Forest.

A great number of petrified tree trunks have been discovered, conserved, preserved in situ and are now displayed in their original place during salvage excavations at the construction site of Kalloni – Sigri road in Western Lesvos.

Dig in one of the most impressive paleontological excavations in Greece. Implementing innovative methodologies and conservation techniques, thousands of petrified tree parts, branches and leaves were excavated, conserved and safely transferred at the Museum. Now all these amazing findings are part of its unique collections.

While the Museum remains closed to the public, we will try to bring it to you by sharing activities, events, exhibitions, geoconservation projects and inspiring stories of its 25-year long journey.

Memories of the earth: UNESCO Global Geoparks of Greece and Cyprus – Geotourism in insular Geoparks

Join us for a throwback to our exhibition “Memories of the earth: UNESCO Global Geoparks of Greece and Cyprus – Geotourism in insular Geoparks”, that took place at Eugenides Foundation in Athens.

The exhibition took us on an unforgettable journey of the geological history and evolution of the Mediterranean through significant findings from the regions in Greece and Cyprus that have been recognized as Unesco Global Geoparks.

The public had the opportunity to discover geotopes, rocks and fossils of unique scientific value, major evidence of the geological evolution of the area, (from the Tethys Ocean to the current active geodynamic deformation of the African and Eurasian plates).

The UNESCO Global Geoparks in Greece and Cyprus offer amazing landscapes, significant geological heritage and rich natural and cultural environment, that could contribute to the development of geotourism by enhancing the local economy and the sustainable growth.

While the Museum remains closed to the public, we will try to bring it to you by sharing activities, events, exhibitions, geoconservation projects and inspiring stories of its 25-year long journey.

Promotion of the Lesvos Petrified Forest

Find out the actions undertaken by the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest in order to protect, conserve and display the fossils at the Lesvos Petrified Forest.

The park of the Lesvos Petrified Forest in the area Bali-Alonia, called “Kiria Apolithomeni” (Main Fossil Site), is the first visiting part of the Petrified Forest, covering an area of 286 hectares.  There you can find a great number of fossilized tree trunks, including the gigantic fossilized sequoia trunks that have been excavated and preserved in situ.

For the last three years the Museum, with the economic support of the Operational Program “North Aegean”, conducted a significant and complex project in order to excavate, protect and conserve the fossils at the Lesvos Petrified Forest. It is its most ambitious and important project since it was founded in 1995.

Implementing innovative methodologies and conservation techniques, the unique fossil-bearing locations (positions/points/sites) have been excavated, conserved and preserved in situ (ή displayed in their original place) and can now be visited by the public.

While the Museum remains closed to the public, we will try to bring it to you by sharing activities, events, exhibitions, geoconservation projects and inspiring stories of its 25-year long journey.

Energy upgrade of the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest

The Museum might be closed to the public, but we keep working and trying to #GoGreen!

We are taking advantage of the Museum’s temporary closure, to work on the project of the energy upgrading of its building and facilities. The project includes the construction of a photovoltaic station on the roof to secure energy efficiency and the installation of led lighting, among others.

The Museum is becoming “green” and will offer an upgraded experience to its public. As soon as the project is completed, our visitors will also have the opportunity to learn about the challenges we are facing because of climate change and the actions we can take to fight it.

Discovering the history of our planet, we have a better understanding of the need for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

We are getting ready to welcome you again at our “Green Museum”. See you soon!
