The
Zhangjiajie World Geopark is located in the Wulingyuan County of
Zhangjiajie City, which is in the northwestern part of Hunan
Province. The Geopark is in the middle of Wulingshan Mountain
that is the joint part of Yungui Plateau and low mountain area
in Hunan Province. The geographical location is as following: 29°13′25″N-29°27′27″N;
110°18′00″E-110°41′15″E. The elevation
is between 300m to 1300m and its area is 398km2.
By
thousands of hundreds years of geological evolution, there are
abundant geological relics in the Zhangjiajie World Geopark.
Taken the quartz sandstone peak forest as its core landform and
supported by the karst caves, it has formed the incomparable
geological landforms that combined the sandstone peak forest,
caves, natural bridges, lakes and waterfalls. The unique scene
is so beautiful and splendid, wonderful and mysterious that it
is not only a tourism resort but also a natural geological
museum. The Zhangjiajie sandstone peak forest is famous for the
greatness and straight, the special shape and high density of
the peaks. For this reason, the Zhangjiajie Geopark has
attracted millions of visitors each year. Within an area about
86km2 between
the elevation of 500~1100m, there are 3103 sandstone peaks that
are about tens of meters high to 400m. These peaks form great
peak clusters. Just like bamboo shoots after rain, these peaks
erect from the ground straightly and up to the sky. And these
peak clusters become mysterious, variable and splendid quartz
sandstone peak forest landform that is vary unique and special
in the world. For this reason, it is called as “the fairyland
on the earth” by the visitors. The typical landform of karst
cave is the Yellow Dragon Cave, which is named as “the
champion of all karst caves”, that almost includes all the
characters in karst cave.
In
the Zhangjiajie World Geopark, it is not only special for its
sandstone peak forest but also for its precious fauna and flora.
This park is a natural arboretum with great number of precious
plants. There are 10 first grade protected plants, 33 kinds of
second grade protected plants. It is also a paradise for animals
that are 4 kinds of first grade protected animals and 10 second
protected in this park.
The
Geopark is located in a minority inhabit area that the major
nationality is Tujia. And it has great, simple and
unsophisticated ethical culture and charming ethical social
customs.
The
Zhangjiajie government has carried out “the project of blue
mountains, green water and peaceful environment” for a long
time, and the geological relics and natural ecological
environment in the Geopark are preserved very well. The tourism
foundation is basically established. There are more than 40
straight airlines to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and
Macao, etc. By train, the rail connects all the big cities in
China. The annual reception of visitors is about 8 million. The
great landform, the natural untouched ecological system and the
profound culture that co-exist harmoniously make the Zhangjiajie
World Geopark a ecological tourism resort with charming scene
and great scientific research value.
