The
"Friends of the Petrified Forest" association is a legal non-profit organization
founded in Mytilene in 2002 on the initiative of citizens interested in the
protection and promotion of the Petrified Forest, Lesvos’ which is a unique
monument of the Nature. Aims
- The ethical and material support
and general assistance of the “Natural History Museum of the Lesvos
Petrified Forest” for the achievement of its purposes.
- The diffusion of knowledge about
the Petrified Forest of Lesvos and, more generally, the natural
history of Lesvos and the Aegean in Greece and internationally to
develop love and respect for the natural environment.
- The communication and
cooperation with similar Greek and international organizations.
- The attraction of the interest
of Greek and European institutions for the protection of the natural
environment, the flora and fauna, ecosystems, biodiversity, biotopes
and geotopes and more general ecological characteristics of Lesvian
nature.
- The support of activities
relevant to the aims of the Museum, such as research, publishing,
education, the organisation of seminars, congresses, exhibitions,
lectures etc
- The promotion of environmental
education and the participation in educational programs.
- The participation in research
and development programs as well as the participation and assistance
of institutions with similar aims.
Actions
Τhe Association has systematically worked towards the achievement of its goals
and the assistance of the Petrified Forest Geopark and the Museum in efforts for
the protection and promotion of the Petrified Forest and the natural heritage.
Activities include:
- Inclusion in the official list
of environmental organisations of Greece by the Ministry of
Environment Planning and Public Works.
- Printed publication "DRASI"
containing information for the Friends about actions taken.
- Creation of a team of
volunteers for promoting the Association and the briefing of
visitors to the Petrified Forest.
- Realisation of the
"Volunteerism in the Petrified Forest" program funded by the
Ministry of Environment Planning and Public Works
- Realisation of the action
concerning the development and application of two educational Museum
kits on the subjects of "The Plants of the Petrified Forest" and
"The Volcanic Rocks".
- Creation of a record of
volunteers.
- Realisation of voluntary work
programs for young people in the Petrified Forest.
- Publication of the periodical
SEQUOIA, in collaboration with the Natural History Museum of the
Lesvos Petrified Forest.
- Publication of the newspaper
"Museum and Sigri" 2006 and 2007
- Organisation of cultural
events "Earth Festival" each summer in collaboration with the
Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest.
- Realisation of the "Sensitisation
actions in the Petrified Forest" program funded by the Ministry of
Employment and Social Protection 2007
- Realisation of the "Sensitisation
actions in the Petrified Forest" program funded by the Ministry of
Employment and Social Protection 2008
Members
The encouragement of the
registration of new members aims at the acquisition of a wider base
of support from social institutions and citizens for all the
initiatives and activities of the Natural History Museum of the
Petrified Forest of Lesvos concerning the protection and promotion
of the Petrified Forest.
